There is a stretch of Workman Mill Road where the road bends and Whittier opens up below you. On a clear morning, you can see all the way to the coast. That is the moment we think about when someone asks why we ride.
The Whittier Loop
Start at Maverick Cycles on Greenleaf Avenue. Head east on Whittier Boulevard until you hit the foothills, then pick up Colima Road toward Hacienda Heights. The climb is steady without being brutal. Enough gradient to test your legs. Enough view to make the effort worth it.
The return via Turnbull Canyon Road is the reward. A technical descent with sightlines that open up just when you need them. We have ridden this loop hundreds of times and it has never gotten old.
The San Gabriel River Trail
When you want distance without traffic, the San Gabriel River Trail delivers. Pick it up near Pioneer Boulevard and follow the river south toward Long Beach. Flat, fast, and removed from everything. It is the route we use for longer tempo efforts and early morning endurance days.
The trail connects to the coast path near Seal Beach, giving you options: turn around, continue south, or loop back through the Long Beach streets if you are feeling ambitious.
Angeles Crest for the Committed
When the legs are good and the schedule is clear, there is only one answer: Angeles Crest Highway. The climb from La Canada begins at 1,200 feet and tops out near 7,900 feet at Red Box. It is one of the great road climbs in Southern California and it is 40 minutes from our front door.
We sell gear designed for this road. The AeroCOOL was developed on this road. If you have not ridden it yet, we are happy to put together a route guide from the shop.
Come Ride With Us
We host group rides every Saturday morning from the shop at 7:30am. All paces welcome. Coffee after. The only rule: keep it rolling and keep it fun.
Maverick Cycles is located at 6732 Greenleaf Avenue, Whittier, CA 90601.
